When I was a volunteer, I thought I understood what the job was. I assumed worship pastors spent most of their week picking songs, making chord charts, dreaming up creative ideas, and sitting in meetings shooting the bull. I also thought they were oblivious to what volunteers were going through. Surely they had no idea what it was like to balance work, family, ministry, and everything else life throws at you.

If you've ever finished rehearsal thinking, "I just can't hear myself," you're not alone. Almost every worship leader I've worked with has fought their in-ear mix at some point. The natural response is to turn yourself up. Then the guitar player turns themselves up. Then the keys player. Then the tracks. Before long, everyone is listening to a louder version of the same muddy mix.

If you've ever driven home after rehearsal wondering why did that feel so chaotic? You're not alone. I've led worship rehearsals that felt effortless. Everyone walked in prepared, we made a few adjustments, ran the set, prayed together, and left feeling confident about Sunday. I've also been part of rehearsals that felt like a three-hour emergency meeting. Wrong arrangements. Last-minute song changes. Musicians asking, "Wait...are we doing the bridge twice or four times?" Nobody enjoys rehearsals like that. The difference usually isn't the musicians. It's the system.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by your current Planning Center setup, don't try to fix everything today. Instead, pick one of these hacks. Maybe you spend an hour creating song tags. Maybe you archive songs that haven't been used in years. Maybe you begin creating separate arrangements whenever you modify a song. Small improvements made consistently lead to a completely different ministry six months from now. That's exactly how healthy worship systems are built.

It’s not that the songs are bad. It’s not that your team can’t play them. And it’s not even that your people don’t want to engage. Most of the time, the issue is much simpler—people don’t like feeling behind. The moment someone feels like they don’t know what’s going on, they begin to disengage. And if we’re not careful, we create that moment for them without even realizing it.

It’s been several years since I sat down and listened to an entire album front to back. I didn’t listen to this album thinking I would write a review. I simply wanted to hear the heart and see the picture Paul painted.

Just because it doesn’t bother you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t bother them.
